What Is Open-Weight Model?
An open-weight model is an AI model whose trained parameters (weights) are published so they can be downloaded and used. Terms of use depend on the licence, and not every open-weight model is open source in the classic sense.
How does it work?
Because the weights are published, the model can be run on the organisation's own infrastructure, fine-tuned, and deployed in a setup where data does not leave. The Meta Llama and Mistral families are examples.
Where is it used?
- On-premise and private cloud deployments
- Projects that need control of data location
- Models fine-tuned for a specific task
Points to watch
- Licence terms (commercial use, user-count limits and so on) must be read for each model separately.
- Quality may differ from the most advanced cloud models; an evaluation on your own data is needed.
- Operation and security updates are the organisation's responsibility.
What does Huaris AI do about it?
Huaris AI evaluates open-weight models against your needs and sets them up with the Product Development, Security and Compliance service. See the Technologies page for model families.
